Fashion designer Hilde Hoff Nordskar founded Recouture in 2023 — the home of the åkle jacket. One-of-a-kind garments, handcrafted in Norway from vintage åkle and curated cultural textiles.

With love for the past and a vision for the future.

Recouture is a Norwegian fashion brand built on the åkle. Norwegian heritage through traditional handweaving. That is what Recouture is built on. It has been a journey getting to know these handwoven art pieces one by one, each pattern carrying generations of Norwegian weaving tradition.

Founder Hilde Hoff Nordskar began redesigning garments by hand in 2015. What drew her in was what happened when a piece was remade: it gained emotional value, an identity, a stronger bond to the person wearing it. She kept returning to woven textiles with a story. In 2023 she gathered her craft under one name: Recouture, with the åkle as its signature. The first pieces sold out in minutes. The åkle jacket has been our icon ever since.

Every piece is designed and handcrafted in our studio, from curated vintage åkler and quality woven textiles, together with family-run Norwegian mills and workshops. Collaborations with Norrøna and HÅG have carried the åkle story to an international audience.

Each garment is one of a kind, made in small series and built to be worn for decades. And it is always welcome back in our studio when it needs care.

Recouture Studio, just outside Oslo: 280 square meters of showroom, production, weaving and design. Every step, from idea to finished garment, happens in-house.

Traditions

Since our first collection in 2023, the åkle has been Recouture’s signature. We work with traditional Norwegian patterned coverlets, handwoven in the 1900s — patterns that originate from different regions of Norway, each with its own weaving technique and story.

Vintage åkler are finite. That is why they are used exclusively in Recouture’s own collections — every garment is one of a kind, and every åkle is honoured for where it comes from. By bringing these textiles into contemporary garments, we hope to keep the tradition alive and ensure that handcraft remains a living part of Norway’s cultural heritage.

Founding mother

Hilde Hoff Nordskar is an educated designer from Esmod Oslo with 18 years of experience in the Norwegian sports and fashion industry — where she learned the craft of garment construction from the inside. Her love for craftsmanship and local traditions comes from her mother and grandmothers, who wove and sewed all their lives. Since 2015 she has been redesigning garments, drawn to the emotional value, identity and personality a remade piece takes on. With Recouture she brings old Norwegian weaving traditions back to life — creating garments with history, made to be loved and worn for decades.
